Microgaming Makes Tracks in Spanish Gambling Market

The Isle of Man based software group, Microgaming, has made further tracks into Spain's regulated online gambling market through its partnership with Prima Networks.

The Malta based Prima Networks will launch into Spain by providing 12 licensed operators with Microgaming's portfolio of mobile and desktop games.

A number of big names have signed up with Prima Networks to obtain Microgaming's titles, among them Betway and Casino Gran Madrid.

Loraine Schoevers, the Director of Prima Networks said about the group's entry into the newly regulated Spanish igambling market:

"Having a large suite of games available in both online and mobile on launch, puts us in a fantastic position to lead the way in slot provision in Spain."

"We are proud to have 12 licensed operators signed, many of which are taking Microgaming slot content exclusively, and we hope to grow our presence in this market even further in the coming months."

New Spanish Gambling Regulations

In October last year, Spain's Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling announced that it would issue an undefined number of new casino licenses to help the local market grow.

The authority gave the green light for operators to apply for a license to offer online slots and betting products, a move with will lead to a wider distribution of Microgaming's titles in the European country.

Spain's new regulations come amidst reports that nearly half of the country's gamblers play at illegal sites.

A report put out by the authority said that "43% of online players admitted doing so on websites that are not regulated by the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling."

"Approximately 12.8% of them declared to never use dot-es websites for their games, which means they play exclusively on illegal sites."

Growing Business in Spain

The change in regulations were announced last year but went into affect this month. For the first time, online slots, such as Microgaming's massive portfolio, as well as financial betting will be allowed to be offered by licensed operators.

As such, Prima Networks is now able to go live with plenty of Microgaming desktop and mobile games, which so many millions of players around the world are already familiar with.

It is safe to say that as more players are exposed to Microgaming games through the twelve new Spanish licensed operators, the popularity of these titles will grow even more.
